PAUL GROSSMANN:  WINTER LIGHT

LOCAL BLOOMFIELD RESIDENT & PHOTOGRAPHER PAUL GROSSMANN CREATED A UNIQUE BODY OF WORK TITLED "WINTER LIGHT.” PAUL'S EXHIBIT FOCUSES ON FINDING THE SUN LOW IN THE SKY IN THE SURROUNDING INDUSTRIAL SETTING OF NORTH JERSEY.

"THERE IS AN ELEMENT OF BEAUTY IN INDUSTRIAL SETTINGS, OF LOOKING AT COMMON THINGS FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE."

PAUL GREW UP IN NEW JERSEY, IN SCOTCH PLAINS. HE HAS LIVED IN BLOOMFIELD FOR 12 YEARS. DRIVING THE BELLEVILLE TURNPIKE TO JERSEY CITY AND NEW YORK OR TAKING THE MONTCLAIR-BOONTON LINE TO WORK IN MANHATTAN, PAUL LOVED LOOKING OUT AT THE VERY SAME MARSHES THAT WERE AT THE SHORE, BUT SURROUNDED BY HIGHWAYS AND PEPPERED WITH SMOKE STACKS AND POWER LINES. HE HAD ALWAYS WANTED TO PHOTOGRAPH THIS AREA BUT THE BEST VANTAGES WERE FROM THE TOPS OF BRIDGES THAT PROVIDED NOWHERE TO PARK OR WALK. THIS KEPT PAUL FROM GETTING OUTSIDE AND CLOSE, BUT HE DECIDED TO SHOOT A FEW IMAGES FROM THE CAR ITSELF, JUST TO SCOUT THE AREA SO HE COULD RETURN LATER.

LATER WHEN HE LOOKED AT THE IMAGES, HE SAW THAT THE DIRT AND SALT ON THE WINDSHIELD COMBINED WITH THE LOW WINTER SUN MADE FOR INTERESTING PHOTOGRAPHS THEMSELVES. HE DECIDED TO KEEP SHOOTING THIS SPECIFIC THEME, EXPANDING THE RANGE OF WHERE TO SHOOT, ALWAYS INCLUDING THE SUN PROMINTENLTY IN THE PHOTOGRAPH. HE SHOT EVERYWHERE HE WENT WHEN THE SUN WAS LOW IN THE SKY AND IN A SCENE HE FOUND INTERESTING. PAUL POSTED THESE IMAGES TO INSTAGRAM, MOST OFTEN WITH THE HASHTAG “WINTERLIGHT”, WHICH DESCRIBES THE EFFECT OF HAVING THE SUN LOW IN THE SKY ALL DAY LONG, AS HAPPENS IN WINTER. HE FOUND THAT ALMOST ANYWHERE COULD BECOME A BEAUTIFUL PLACE GIVEN THE RIGHT LIGHT AND THE RIGHT POINT OF VIEW. INCLUDED HERE ARE IMAGES FORM INDUSTRIAL AREAS, PARKING LOTS AND HIGHWAYS.

THIS IS AN ONGOING SERIES OF PHOTOGRAPHS, AND DOES NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WINTER. ANYTIME THE SUN IS BRIGHT AND LOW IN THE SKY, PAUL TRIES TO SHOOT.

PAUL HAS BEEN A PHOTOGRAPHER SINCE 1997, WHEN HE FIRST MADE THE SERIOUS COMMITMENT BY ATTENDING THE ART INSTITUTE OF PHILADELPHIA AFTER GRADUATING FROM SETON HALL WITH A COMMUNICATIONS DEGREE. HOWEVER LIKE MOST PHOTOGRAPHERS PAUL HAD BEEN INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE CHILDHOOD, WHEN HE RECEIVED HIS FIRST CAMERA, A KODAK DISC, AND WOULD TAKE IT WITH HIM WHEN HIS MOTHER WOULD TAKE HIM AND HIS SISTER FOR WALKS AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.
