Barn Reno Update Week 1

Our super awesome and patient contractor AJD Builders started the Barn a week or two early. We thought after Labor Day but we got lucky!

Apparently the barn was 6" off level so they had to jack it up. I mean the building is over a 100 years old so give it a break. We should allow it some imperfections.

Then giant thick support beams were put in there to hold up the 2nd floor loft. More Demo, Some support posts and lots of explaining.

Reviving the Barn - It Begins

It is finally happening!

It feels like its been years but really we moved end of May so its been a few months. But Chris without his workshop is like a bird without a song... or Lucy without her peanut butter filled Kong.

Chris really can't contain his excitement. Once we both got past the large chunk of change that the Barn reno would require, we got happy.

Chris has been documenting the Barn transformation and playing around with Youtube. Check out a few of his posts if you like to follow along.

Once the Barn is up and running we have a few projects lined up. Looking at you Wagon Wheel Coffee Table! And then will turn our attention back to the house. Because after all the work we did before we moved in, we needed a break. So we took the summer off. And have been living with a nail gun and air compressor in our bedroom just waiting to finish that moulding...

HOUSE UPDATE: KITCHEN BEFORE/MIDDLE/ALMOST THERE

Diving into the details a bit, I figured we would start with the Kitchen. Our house needs a bit (a lot) of work since it hasn't been touched really since the 60s/70s so we decided to do things in phases. The Kitchen is strangely but happily large for an old home like this. Everyone ends up in the kitchen so I will take a larger kitchen over a cozier Living Room.

Everyone who has ever demo'd or remodeled told us to wait. To live in the space a bit to get a feel for it. Then you know what works, what doesn't, how you use the space. So you can really remodel to fit your lifestyle and be happy about it with NO REGRETS...That's what we are doing. We are going to facelift the kitchen and revisit with a full remodel down the road. I keep saying 5 year plan. But who knows right? It could be 1 year... or never. Either way it will be cleaner. That's the goal.

KITCHEN AT TIME OF CLOSING

THIS GIVES YOU AN IDEA OF EACH WALL. IT'S A ROUGH 360.  WALLPAPER, CURTAINS, ETC.

We are lucky because we the layout is pretty simple. Lots of cabinet space & 2 giant double pantries. The cabinets are dated but they are perfect to paint. I found a dishwasher (which we need to install as there wasn't one) and an electric oven (bummer but such is life) on Craigslist for $150. Just need a serious deep clean as does everything else in this house.

We refinished the floors with the rest of the house. Chris is going to build us an island. A few more cosmetic updates and the kitchen is perfectly fine. Allowing us time to feel it out and spend the big bucks on getting the barn up and running for Chris' workshop. Priority #2 after the main house being clean and safe for Evie... 1 year olds tend to find all the bad stuff and immediately put it in their mouths, forget about the dogs...

ENOUGH ALREADY, lets see some pictures, videos, blood, sweat, tears...

KITCHEN WALLPAPER MEMORY REEL

THESE 4 BEAUTIES COVERED THESE PLASTER WALLS AT SOME POINT IN THIS KITCHEN'S LIFE.  I WONDER WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE?

REMOVED WALLPAPER, SKIM COATED (THANKS TO MY FATHER IN LAW) & PAINTED A MINT GREEN (THAT TOOK ME A FEW TRIES TO GET RIGHT)

SOME SUPER FUN PHOTOS THROUGH THE TRANSITION. FEEL THE PAIN & THE JOY...

AND HERE WE ARE... APRIL 15TH. OUR VERY GENEROUS FATHER IN LAW GAVE US THE FRIDGE (SINCE THE OWNER TOOK HERS WITH HER). WE HAVE TO INSTALL THE DISHWASHER & HOOD. CALLING THE ELECTRICIAN TOMORROW. TOUCHUPS, POTENTIALLY PAINTING THE COUNTERTOP WITH ONE OF THOSE KITS. CHRIS IS BUILDING THE ISLAND (ON HIS LIST...) AND SO ON. I MEAN THE REST IS THE FUN STUFF. THE EASY STUFF. THE DECORATING. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT...
